瀬戸内海から南九州の亜热帯水域までの西日本海域をフィールドに、鱼介类の再生产机构や生活史を详细に分析する调査?研究を进めている。これによって资源生物の有効利用に贡献することを目指している。
1） 浅海魚類の社会構造や繁殖戦略を個体レベルで明らかにする行動生態学的研究を行っている。性転換魚類や、陸上生活能力をもつ魚類を材料に、鹿児島県口永良部島と呉市倉橋島のフィールドで野外調査研究を進めている。また、瀬戸内海水域の魚介類を材料に、成長?成熟パターンなど生活史の解明を主眼とした個体群生態学?資源生物学的研究も行っている（坂井）。
2) 沿岸性魚介類の生活史および生物生産の時空間的変異に着目し、生物の種間関係や環境との相互作用が及ぼす影響について研究を進めている（冨山）。
